History of the Triad Rotary Club
The Rotary Club of the Triad was first chartered
on June 6, 1978 as the Rotary Club of North High Point. Our club
was co-sponsored by the Rotary Club of High Point and the Furnitureland
Rotary Club. Twenty-four men became charter members in ceremonies
held at the High Point Country Club on June 27, 1978.
Twenty-seven years later, we are very fortunate
that five of these original members are still active in our club:
- Jim Sloop
- Owen Bertschi
- Bruce Laney
- Stewart Hartley (who holds the honor as the first member)
- Jay Motsinger
Our first slate of officers was elected to serve
for the 1978-1979 Rotary year:
- PRESIDENT: Yogi Yarborough
- VICE PRESIDENT: Barry Schultheiss
- SECRETARY: Ron Ashby
- TREASURER: Harrison Turnbull
- SERGEANT AT ARMS: Walt Snider
- DIRECTORS: Dick Culler, Claude Hedgecock, Eddie Sams, &
Bill Wyche
In the early years, our club meetings were held
on Tuesdays at the Holiday Inn in downtown High Point. Later, we
moved to the Radisson and although we continue to meet for lunch
on Tuesdays, we now call the String and
Splinter Club home.
